Best Time to Trade Gold (XAUUSD): Sessions and Hours

Updated 11 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

Gold trades almost around the clock on weekdays, but it is not equally active at every hour. Knowing when volume and volatility rise helps you plan, and helps you avoid the quiet or news-driven moments that surprise beginners. New to gold? Start with the beginner guide.

The four trading sessions

Times below are approximate and shift by an hour with daylight saving. They are shown in UTC. East Africa Time is UTC+3, so add three hours.

SessionApprox. hours (UTC)What to expect
Sydney21:00 to 06:00Usually quiet for gold
Tokyo00:00 to 09:00Moderate activity, often range-bound
London07:00 to 16:00Volume rises, major moves often start
New York12:00 to 21:00High activity, driven by US data

The London and New York overlap

When both sessions are open, roughly 12:00 to 16:00 UTC, trading volume is typically at its highest. Spreads are often tighter and price tends to move more, which gives more opportunity and more risk.

News times matter most

Gold reacts strongly to US economic news. Watch for these on an economic calendar:

US jobs report (non-farm payrolls)
US inflation data (CPI)
Federal Reserve interest rate decisions and speeches
Major geopolitical headlines

Around these events, price can jump within seconds and spreads can widen sharply. Many beginners choose to stay out of the market until after the release.

Hours to be careful

Trading is thinner and spreads are often wider near the daily rollover around 21:00 to 22:00 UTC, just after the market reopens on Sunday evening, and late on Friday. Thin markets can also produce sudden spikes and gaps.

How to use this

1. Pick one session that suits your time zone and stick to it.
2. Check the economic calendar each day before trading.
3. Compare your broker's spread at different hours. See the brokers page.
4. Practise on a demo account first and keep position sizes small.
Risk warning: CFDs are complex and carry a high risk of losing money rapidly because of leverage. Most retail accounts lose money. This article is educational, not financial advice, and session times are approximate.
